Product mockups aren’t just digital renderings; they’re a gateway to envisioning your ideas in the real world.
In our tutorial, we’ll showcase how these visual prototypes empower designers and marketers to visualize, iterate, and perfect their designs before production. By understanding the art of crafting compelling product mockups, you gain a vital tool to refine your brand’s image and significantly impact your audience’s perception, fostering trust and enhancing the overall user experience.
Step 1: Choose the suitable product packaging
Begin by identifying the most appropriate packaging style for your products, whether it be pouches, cans, or boxes. Insert a plain packaging mockup into Photoshop.
Step 2: Select and isolate the packaging
Utilize the Quick Selection Tool from the right-hand menu to precisely select the main object, in this case, the packaging.
Step 3: Define the Packaging Design
- Navigate to the Paths section in the left-hand menu and create a new working path.
- Return to Layers choose Create New Fill or Adjustment Layer and opt for Solid Color to assign your object a desired colour.
- Select Convert into Smart Object by right-clicking on the respective layer.
Step 4: Incorporate Your Design
- Access the smart object thumbnail with a double click to enter another canvas containing only your pre-selected object.
- Insert your packaging design either via Home > Place Embedded or Open > Select Image > CTRL+A > CTRL+C to copy the image > CTRL+V to paste it onto the canvas.
Step 5: Align with the Mockup
- To align your design with the mockup’s shape, use CTRL+ALT+G.
- Further, adjust the design’s shape and size on the packaging mockup using CTRL+T.
Step 6: Save and Review
- After making adjustments, save your progress with CTRL+S.
- Return to the original canvas, and set the appropriate blending mode for the layers. In this example, we utilized “Multiply.” Voila! Your product packaging is now ready!
Step 7: Iterate and Explore
Since we’ve saved it as a smart object, modifying the product design is a breeze. Simply click the thumbnail to add a new design to the mockup, utilizing the previously mentioned steps.
